This is a recording of a dialogue Patricia Clough and I had this week at the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Conference. In it we discuss our idea of the Promethean impulse as it relates to technology in psychoanalysis, something that can feel by turns socially transgressive, dangerous and brave, i.e., daring to understand technology. We critique technophobia’s relationship to race and class hatred; the differences between the individual and the human individual; and distinguishing between technology and capitalism in terms of ontology and ethics. Lastly, we discuss what such a brave new approach could do to decolonize psychotherapy practice for ourselves and our patients, and how we can better work with patients who like us find themselves embedded in a rapidly advancing technological landscape where the psyche and social are struggling to recalibrate. Apologies for the soft intro and spotty captioning. Enjoy!
